Teaching Artist, Dance and Written Word

Residencies and Professional Development Workshops

I am on the Tennessee Arts Commission Artist Roster in the category of Dance and Professional Development, and residency fees may be reimbursed through applying for a grant with TAC.  I am also a member of TAC’s recently formed ArtistCorps TN and can conduct arts-based service learning residencies, which are also eligible for grants.

In addition I conduct regular aesthetic education residencies and professional development seminars offered through TPAC Education. Below are two examples of independent residencies I offer. Each residency can be customized for each school, and these are just two examples of themes to explore. Collaborating with teachers optimizes the benefits for students:

  • Giving Back:  Honoring ourselves, our leaders and our communities through Dance Designed specifically for 5th grade, but adaptable for grades 3-6.  Students explore characteristics of communities and cultures, work in small groups to create and define their own community, then explore ways to express their group identity through dance. They reflect on historical figures who have positively impacted their communities and the world, and then individually on what they have to give back to the community, and express this through movement. The culmination of the program is sharing of student-created dances which reflect values of their community and student’s individual contributions. Connects with 5th grade social studies curriculum on Civil Rights leaders, and the following national dance content standards: Understanding choreographic principles, processes, and structures; Understanding dance as a way to create and communicate meaning; Applying and demonstrating critical and creative thinking skills in dance.
  • The Science of Dance Students discuss and explore concepts of inertia, momentum, swing, counterbalance, magnetic forces and more, then transform these explorations into art by using the concepts in small group choreography they create themselves. Connects to 5th grade science curriculum and national dance content standards.

Through TPAC Education, I work with a team of lead Teaching Artists to offer two and three-day seminars in aesthetic education and arts integration, as well as three-hour teacher refresher workshops and professional development for other Teaching Artists. Independently or with a colleague, I can design and facilitate customized, experiential professional development for teachers.

  • Arts Integration for Teachers An after-school or full-day in-service workshop customized to fit each school’s need. Creative explorations unleash the artist in each teacher. Teachers explore ways to incorporate the arts in the classroom to fully engage students and make meaningful connections between the arts, academic curriculum, and the world.
