My approach to Teaching Artistry, whether in schools, in professional development seminars or in workshops for the community, always involves deep reflection, inquiry, guided exploration and creation of works of art. I am rooted in community service and social justice, and often infuse participant creative involvement in my work as a choreographer and activist.

NEWS:

I have recently enjoyed offering two series of creative process, personal growth classes for adults at Art & Soul and this spring brings a new series, “Shifting Sands, Divining Balance,” beginning Tuesday evenings March 6th, 2012.

“Confluence”, a foray into blending site-specific choreography and film, premiered at Women’s Works 2011 on May 14th at the Looby Theater in Nashville. This was an exciting project with Blue Moves, working in water and creating a piece for film. “Confluence” was featured in Blue Moves’ “Deep Blue” August 26th, 2011 at the Darkhorse Theater, as well as in Chattanooga’s MAX 24 Festival and the Nashville Fringe Festival in September of 2011.

In April and May I enjoyed working at Bradley Academy, conducting a residency about Healthy Communities for grades K through 3rd in which we explored ways in which we can build stronger, healthier communities in school and what we have to give back to our community, and I also conducted a choreographic residency for selected students from 4th and 5th grades. In June I joined a team of Teaching Artists in facilitating TPAC Education’s Summer Institute, a three-day intensive, experiential immersion in arts education and arts integration for teachers, as well as Fall Institute in October. In July I joined presenters from across the country at Tennessee Arts Commission’s Create2011.

In December I was honored to be selected and trained as a teaching artist for Disney’s Musicals in the Schools program, and am working with my teaching artist partner Robyn Berg and a team of faculty members from Kirkpatrick Elementary Enhanced Option for the winter/spring semester in producing a musical with inner-city 3rd and 4th graders. February brings aesthetic education workshops for teachers and TPAC Education residencies focusing on the daring contemporary dance company Diavolo.

I also work as a freelance writer and often focus on social justice issues. On February 9th and 10th, 2012, I spent 24 hours camping out on Legislative Plaza in downtown Nashville with Occupy Nashville as research for an article in the spring issue of the literary webzine, Nashville Skyline. The stories of the people there are compelling, and there are plenty of false stereotypes about who they are and what they do. You can see some photos and read some of what they have to say in this video which gives a preview to the article, 24 Hours with Occupy Nashville.
